Fall Winter Summer Spring
Benefits of eating seasonal produce
Seasonal produce is fresh and tastes it's best when "in season". It is harvested at peak freshness making it taste better and is most packed with nutrients at that time! When picked at the right time, produce has had a chance to ripen naturally on the parent plant vs ripening while it's one it's way to the grocery store, sometimes days/weeks on a truck.
Shop local- as I mentioned before, produce sometimes sits on a truck for days/weeks while getting across the country to where it will be sold. Then these fruits and veggies also sit in the back of the grocery store storage room until they are ready to be brought up to the front of the store to sell. Shopping locally will also help your local economy and help you save money because there is no middle man. To me it's the better end of the deal because I know the produce has just been picked and I get ALL the nutrients nature intended! From the time it was picked and to the time I eat it is just days whereas produce purchased at the grocery store was likely picked over a week ago.
Grab your reusable bags and hit your local Farmer's Market! Get the kids involved in picking out some fruits and veggies they want to try. Talk to the sellers at the market, they can tell you EVERYTHING you want to know about how the produce was grown and where it came from. Ask them their favorite way to use specific fruits and veggies in recipes.
